Abstract: The Gross-Zagier formula is one of most beautiful and
deepest formulae discovered in Number Theory in 1980s. It has a lot
of deep applications (e.g. Gauss's class number problem and the
well-known BSD conjecture on elliptic curves). After more thank
twenty years, it is still a mystery why such a formula is true in
this first place although it is the first thing to come to mind when
talking about the arithmetic of derivative of a function. On the
other hand, Shou-Wu Zhang has generalized it greatly to Shimura
curves over totally really number fields, and others including
Darmon, Kudla, Rapopot, Bruinier and myself have tried to understand
the Gross-Zagier from different point of view. In this talk, we will
give an informal introduction to this beautiful formula and try to
give brief introduction on different thoughts on this formula.
