《算术代数几何选讲》课程计划:

《算术代数几何选讲》面向数学系高年级本科生和研究生，讲述数论中的代数几何方法，尤其是Diophantus 几何方法的主要思想。通过这门课程，我计划达到三个目标：让学生掌握代数几何的基本概念和技巧，了解Diophantus 几何的重要问题和经典结果，接触这一方向上研究的新进展。预计需要48 小时左右的授课时间。Diophantus 问题是数论中最古老，同时又最具活力的方向之一。它研究整系数多项式方程(组) 整解的性质，如存在性、有限性、以及渐近性质等等。许多数论上著名的猜想，比如Fermat 最后定理，Hilbert 第十问题，Birch 和Swinnerton-Dyer 猜想，Mordell 猜想，以及abc 猜想等等，都与Diophantus 问题密切相关。这些猜想中的一大部分远未解决，同时已经解决的那些又派生出许多重要的问题，这吸引着一代代数学工作者去探索和研究.

半个世纪多来，代数几何在Grothendieck 学派的影响下有了长足的进展，为Diophantus 问题提供了新的工具和方法，得到了许多重要的结果，其中最具代表性的就包括Mordell 猜想及Fermat 最后定理的解决。这些进展使得代数几何成为Diophantus 问题研究人员所必备的基础知识。同时，代数几何在许多数学及应用数学的方向上有广泛的应用。在本课程的前半部分中就将用现代观点来讲述代数几何的基础知识，内容主要包括层和上同调理论，概形论，Abel 簇理论等。出于时间的考虑，计划只讲述课程后半部分用到的概念和定理。但所有提到的代数几何概念都将在
课程中详细定义，并且讲述定理的严格证明。学生只需具备复变函数和抽象代数的基础知识就可以修这门课程。在完成课程后，程度较好的学生应具有独立阅读代数几何方向的教科书和工具书的能力。另外，经典Diophantus 逼近理论中的思想和方法也在Diophantus 几何中发挥了重要的作用。比如Faltings 对于Mordell 猜想的证明就综合了Arakelov 几何(几何方法) 和Roth 定理(Diophantus 逼近) 的思想。在课程的前半部分也会有选择地讲述关于经典Diophantus 逼近的内容。课程的后半部分重点放在与数论密切相关的几何概念和方法上。首先会对代数数论的基础知识作一个介绍，然后着重从几何的角度讲述高度理论(height theory)，特别是Abel 簇上Neron-Tate 高度论。至此学生们应对Diophantus 几何经典的问题和结论中出现的概念有较为全面的认识。在此基础上，我计划根据具体情况从下述论题
中选择一到两者加以介绍：

1) Vojta 对Mordell 猜想的证明。
2) 算术代数簇上的动力系统和Bogomolov 猜想。
3) 函数域上的abc 猜想。
4) 斜率方法及其在Grothendieck-Katz 猜想中的应用。
5) 值分布理论和Diophantus 逼近的类比。
6) 算术相交理论。

Arakelov几何讨论班:

讨论班计划每周一次，计划集中讨论Arakelov 几何的一些最新进展，比如算术 Fujita 逼近定理及其应用，典则高度函数与算术动力系统，匀称分布定理及相关问题，环面簇上的算术几何，模空间中的算术相交理论等等，期间还将邀请该方向前沿的国内外数学家作系列报告并深入讨论。

Abstract: Building on the works of Colmez and Berger-Breuil, we determine the

locally analytic vectors of those unitary representations of GL_2(Qp)

which, under the p-adic local Langlands correspondence of GL_2(Qp),

correspond to 2-dimensional Frobenius semisimple irreducible

crystabelian representations of the absolute Galois group of Qp wiht

distincet Hodge-Tate weights. This proves a conjecture of Breuil.

Abstract: Given a n-dimensional lattice in the m-dimensional
Euclidean space R^m, the shortest lattice vector problem (SVP)
is to find a shortest non-zero lattice vector. This optimization
problem has wide ranging fundamental applications in mathematics,
computer sciences and enginnering. The history of SVP dates back
to Gauss, Dirichlet and Hermite who studied it in the language of
quadratic forms in connection to number theory and diophantine
approximation. Proving the existence of short lattice vectors is
a central problem in geometry of numbers as founded by Minkowski.
The celebrated LLL (Lenstra-Lenstra-Lovasz) algorithm was a major
breakthrough in solving SVP. The SVP is currently one of the most
active and intensively studied topics in mathematics and
computer sciences.

In this expository lecture, we shall give an overview of the
developments on the SVP, as well as its connections to
computational complexity (NP-hard problems) and cryptography,
focusing more on recent progresses.

When a Calabi–Yau threefold is non-rigid, the dimension B
3
of the Galois repre-
sentation gets rather large, and the modularity question poses a serious challenge.
We will construct explicit examples of non-rigid Calabi–Yau threefolds fibered
over P
1
by non-constant semi-stable K3 surfaces and reaching the Arakelov–Yau
upper bound. For these examples, we prove that the “interesting” part of their
L-series do come from modular forms.
Further, we will consider more general K3-fibered Calabi–Yau threefolds over Q
than the above examples. For these Calabi–Yau threefolds, we decompose Calabi–
Yau threefolds into motives. Then we address the modularity question for some of
the motives. We will compute the motivic zeta-functions and L-series, and establish
the modularity in a number of examples.
We also discuss arithmetic mirror symmetry for these Calabi-Yau threefolds.
This is a joint work in progress with Y. Goto and R. Kloosterman.

Abstract: We start with the multiplicative structure of numbers and the elementary local-global structure of numbers, and then discuss the local-global structure in elementary harmonic analysis and how to use them to study objects in number theory, like the Riemann zeta functions. The modern theory of automorphic forms is a natural extension of these classical theory, which encodes the deep local-global relations for harmonic analysis or representations of reductive algebraic groups over number fields. This becomes the main part of the Langlands program .I will discuss my recent work along these lines of ideas.

Abstract:In these lectures, we'd like to survey some recent development on various equidistribution problems concerning the cuspidal holomorphic Hecke-eigenforms on arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces, which are analogues of the ergodicity of Laplacian eigenfunctions on surfaces whose geodesic flow is ergodic, as well as its higher dimensional generalization to arithmetic quotients of Hermitian symmetric spaces of non-compact type, with focus on the Siegel modular varieties and Hilbert-Blumenthal varieties. Our approach is via the Selberg trace formula, through the Bergman kernel and the Selberg-Godement dimension formula. In the case of modular surface, we'll give applications of a remarkable relation (a la Jacquet, Harris-Kudla and Watson) between the equidistribution of eigenforms and the degree 8 triple product L-functions. Next we turn to more geometric equidistribution results. It is well-known that the closed geodesics on the modular surface, when collected according to the discriminants, are equidistributed with respect to the hyperbolic measure, by the works of Duke and Iwaniec.
We study and evaluate asymptotically the variance of this distribution on the unit tangent bundle, and show it is equal to the classic variance of the geodesic flow as introduced and studied by Ratner, but twisted by an intriguing arithmetic invariant, the central value of certain L-function. Our approach is via Weil representation and the theta correspondence. Some of the above works are based on my various joint works with J.Cogdell, Z.Rudnick and P.Sarnak.

This is a three-week workshop on irreducible supercuspidal representations of p-adic classical groups, classification of unitary representations, and relative trace formula for automorphic forms, organized by Dihua Jiang, Ye Tian and Fei Xu

The program is from July 1 to 20, 2008. The lectures are arranged as follows:

July 2-4: Lectures on basics of representations of p-adic groups(organized by Dihua Jiang)

Title: "The Brauer group of surfaces"

Abstract:

This is a joint work with Dino Lorenzini and Michel Raynaud.
Let X be a projective smooth surface defined over a finite
field. Let Br(X) be its Brauer group. It is conjectured that
this group is finite. For a long time, people believed it is
order is not always a perfect square because of a computation
mistake by Y. Manin. We prove in this work that actually
the order of Br(X), if finite, is a perfect square. The proof
is based on Kato-Trihan's theorem (on Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer's
conjecture for abelian varieties over a finite field),
Poonen-Stoll's theorem on the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group
of Jacobians, Milnes's solution to Artin-Tate conjecture and
our previous working relating Brauer group and Tate-Shafarevich
group.

Title: "On the Grothendieck ring of varieties"

Abstract:
This is a joint work with Julien Sebag. Let k be a field.
Let K_0(V_k) be the Grothendieck ring of algebraic varieties
over k (it is the ring of isomorphic classes of algebraic
varieties over k, quotient by the relations [X]=[Y]+[X\Y]
whenever X is an algebraic variety over k and Y is a
closed subvariety of X). It is a kind of universal
motives ring. Our aim is to give some properties of huge ring.
Most results are true only for characteristic zero field k
using desingularization and factorization of birational
morphisms, but in positive characteristics we can also
derive some basic properties.

Mathieu Florence: Galois cohomology and essential dimension

Prof. Mathieu Florence from Universite Paris 6 (Jussieu) will visit us from April, 19 to May, 17. He will give a course about

'Galois cohomology and essential dimension'.

Here is the brief of the course:

In the beginning I plan to give a (more or less brief) overview about algebraic groups and their Galois cohomology, then switch to essential dimension: general properties and results, upper bounds for some algebraic groups, links with other fields in algebra. Then, I plan to explain some recent results, like my own (or its generalization by Karpenko and Merkurjev) on the essential dimension of cyclic p-groups, and even other results by Rost, or Brosnan-Reichstein-Vistoli, or Brosnan on essential dimension of elliptic curves over number fields, if I have time.
My idea was to give 3-4 hours of lectures a week, but I can also adjust this according to your preference.

The course is schedule every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:00-4:15 pm in MCM410.
